She reached the start of Jawbone Walk, at the entrance to which giant inverted whale jaws served as an arch. Many Scots had been whalers and these bones had been presented to the city by Shetland and Fair Isle knitters who had used them in an exhibition in the nineteenth century. Isabel thought that knitting and whaling did no sit together well:....While whaling and knitting probably do not sit together well, this is a true story and an acutal place in Edinburgh. Here is the picture from the archives. Here is a knitter who took pictures of the arch as it looks today, and you can see the actual monument with it's mysterious dedication to the Zetland Fair Isle Knitters. And so we are left to ponder why we are getting 12 inches of snow today and why a group of knitters would donate a whale jawbone to the exhibition in 1886 in Edinburgh??? While you figure it out, I'll just enjoy the beautiful white world outside.

Merry Christmas
It's snowing. We have had a literal foot of snow since early this morning and it is still snowing. Since Calgary is a basic parking lot, I'm going to stay home and paint and hopefully finish a Baby Charlie Brown toque I've been inventing. My MIL sent me this quote from "The Careful Use of Compliments" by Alexander McCall Smith.
