Semaphore

The word for today is semaphore. It is so refreshing to see this word used in such a creative way as in Kate Greenville's Secret River.
Semaphore: n; a system of signaling, esp. a system by which a special flag is held in each hand and various positions of the arms indicate specific letters, numbers, etc.

"His bushy eyebrows were a semaphore of distress as he floundered on."(Secret River by Kate Greenville)
